First Grade Gazette

Dear Parents,

May is here!  It is hard to believe, but the last month of school us underway.  Please continue to encourage your child to enjoy school and the lessons learned.  Many of our days will be filled with different activities.  We have a Chick Night, field day, and the talent show.  It will be a lot fun!

We have recorded many great memories throughout this school year.  Please check out the pictures at our blog mrmooresclassblog@blogspot.com  .

Chick Night will be held on May 21st from 6:00-7:00.  More information about this event will be coming home as the date approaches.  There is no school on Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day.  Monday, June 1st is field day and many volunteers are always needed for this great event.  The last hurrah is the last day of school on Tuesday, June 2nd as well as the school talent show.

If you did not already guess or know, the eggs have arrived!  I imagine your child has told you all about the chicken eggs we are caring for this year.  Ask them what is happening in the egg and how we are caring for them.  Your child should be able to tell you about their development.  We also have caterpillars in the room and they will grow and change to Monarch Butterflies.

We will be finishing the last Scholastic Reading Book for the school year.  We are learning about causes and effects, characters, and settings within a text.  After your child reads to you, ask them where the story took place or what was the setting like in different parts of the story.  You can also challenge them to tell you one cause of an effect that occurred during the story.  These concepts may be difficult for your son or daughter as they are still trying to understand what they read.  If that is true, then you can model for them how to think about stories and connect to what was read.  The most important thing to remember is that daily reading is the best way to improve one’s reading skills and confidence.

In math we are continuing to solve number stories, tell time, use shapes in various ways, investigate fractions, and use data to solve problems.  In addition to all of those skills, we will keep reviewing our number sense through adding and subtracting.

I would like to give a huge THANK YOU for preparing your child so well and caring for them every day.  Have a great weekend and please let me know if you any questions about anything happening in our classroom or at Westview.

Sincerely,
Mr. Moore
