Week of February 16th

Weekly Learning

Reading: We are working on tapping/sounding out 5-6 letter words this week.  We are continuing to learn new vowel teams (ai, ay, ee, ea, ey, oi, oy, oo, oe, ow) to help us become more accurate and fluent readers.  We also have worked with r controlled vowels and the vowel sound changes due to the r behind it in many words.  Reading about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are planned for this week.  The texts we read will be some of the first informational stories read this year and we will emphasize the knowledge gained from informational or non-fiction texts.  As always, we will work with understanding what we read and focus on learning new vocabulary through picture clues and context clues.

Writing: A report on George Washington or Abraham Lincoln will start next week.  This will be our first information writing and require a new type of writing style.  Proper capitalization, organization, punctuation, and spelling will be stressed as well as using our resources for information to ensure accurate details.  This writing will take at least two weeks to complete.

Math: Topic 10 will explore adding with tens and ones.  We will add with groups of ten, tens on a hundreds chart, tens to two-digit numbers, and mental math to solve problems with tens.  Any games you can play at home to help reinforce the place values would be great.

Social Studies and Science: Science learning will be revolving around the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.  Social Studies will have us share our artifacts from home.
