Week of January 19th

Reading: Reviewing all of the rules and patterns we have learned to this point in Fundations will occur this week.  We are looking at how to identify closed syllable words versus open syllable words.  Sounding out words should be getting easier and quicker through our daily practice.  We will finish reading two different versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff  during class this week.  We always work on understanding what we read, but an emphasis will be placed on using text evidence to support our answers as well reading with a purpose for the overall story and on specific pages.  This purposeful reading will encourage us to be more careful about reading closely for understanding.

Writing: Writing steps or in a sequence to build a snowman will be our task this week (last week's snow day hindered this process).  Last week's story was about a play and how the characters follow guidelines to be prepared for the performance.  We will follow that idea and write about creating a snowman by following steps.  Building on previous learning and improving our writing content, spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be the focus for this week and the rest of the school year.

Math: Topic 8 will investigate the tens and ones places.  We will read numbers in standard form (44), expanded form (40 +4), words (forty-four), and pictures (longs and cubes to indicate tens and ones places).  Any games you can play at home to help reinforce the place values would be great.

Social Studies and Science: Science learning will be revolving around the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.  Social Studies will be focusing on why we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and how he impacted society forever.
