Week of January 12th

Reading: Consonant blends and r controlled vowels will be reinforced this week.  Learning about these areas will greatly help us sound out and read more words.  We will read a few different versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff  during class this week.  We always work on understanding what we read, but an emphasis will be placed on using text evidence to support our answers as well reading with a purpose for the overall story and on specific pages.  This purposeful reading will encourage us to be more careful about reading closely for understanding.

Writing: Writing steps or in a sequence to build a snowman will be our task this week (last week's snow day hindered this process).  Last week's story was about a play and how the characters follow guidelines to be prepared for the performance.  We will follow that idea and write about creating a snowman by following steps.  Building on previous learning and improving our writing content, spelling, grammar, and punctuation will be the focus for this week and the rest of the school year.

Math: Topic 7 will investigate larger numbers.  We will read, count, and write them through using various methods to solve addition and subtraction problems.  Please check out the Xtramath or Sumdog websites to allow your child to practice at home in a fun way.

Social Studies and Science: Science learning will be revolving around the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.  The field trip this week will focus on that concept.  Social Studies will be wrapping up laws and treating each other with respect.
