Week of October 20th

Weekly Learning

Reading: Our FUNdations learning is moving forward with glued or welded sounds /am/ and /an/.  We will practice using and reading those sounds in words in addition to the glued sound of /all/.  We will read To the Woods (level D) during class this week.  Throughout the story, we will focus on comprehending what we read while using text evidence to support our responses.  Students will take a multiple choice assessment to demonstrate the understanding they had while reading and listening to the story.  Please work on comprehension daily with your child by asking them the 5 W's.  If your child can tell you who, what, when, how, or why about the story being read or listened to, then strong comprehension is taking place.

Writing: Scarecrows will be hanging around the halls of Westview soon.  A story describing the scarecrows will accompany the creative and unique scarecrows.  An emphasis on using capital letters correctly, proper spelling and grammar, and accurate punctuation will be stressed.  We will also introduce adjectives and how they can help create a clearer picture for the reader.

Math: Topic 2 wrapped up last week with a test covering subtraction and how various strategies can help solve subtraction or take away problems.  Please review the assessment with your child and reinforce any skills needed.  We will work on subtraction throughout the school year as well.  Topic 4 will start on Monday and continue for a few weeks with an emphasis on solving addition and subtraction facts using different methods.  Please check out the Xtramath or Sumdog websites to allow your child to practice at home in a fun way.

Social Studies and Science: Fire Safety will be discussed this week during Social Studies.  We will also have a presentation from the Avon Lake Fire Department.  Science time will be used to compare and contrast two living things using a venn diagram.
